Q: Metro Access

A:Taking the Metro:

Take the Red Line to the Catholic University/Brookland Metro Station. Metro Buses H2 and H4 will bring you to the VAMC.

Q: Where do I park when I visit the Washington DC VA Medical Center?

A: If you are a veteran, you may utilize valet parking between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays simply by driving to the front of the medical center and showing the valet service personnel your VA ID card. There is adequate parking for visitors in parking lots, clearly marked "Visitors' Parking".

Q: Do I have to pay for valet parking?

A: Valet parking is available to patients, free of charge.

Q: When may I visit patients in the medical center?

A: Visiting hours are11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.

Q: What type of identification is required for visitors?

A: Visitors must present a photo ID when entering the building. Visitors must enter through the main entrance. Vendors are required to wear a temporary pass, which can be obtained from the DCVAMC Police in room1E200, located in the Ambulatory Evaluation Center (Emergency Room).

Q: Alcohol and Illegal Drugs

A: Medical Center regulations do not permit abusive or profane language on property. Gambling is forbidden.
Soliciting, bartering, selling or use and possession of intoxicants or unauthorized drugs are strictly forbidden.
For the protection of patients, visitors and employees, if you should observe such misconduct by anyone, please report it to VAMC police.

A: Access to the facility is made via gates one and two, located on First Street, N.W.

Q: Who do I contact if I have any concerns, complaints, compliments, or just need information or assistance at the DCVAMC, who do I contact?

A: Patient Advocates will address your needs. To contact a Patient Advocate, please call (202) 745-8588 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Q: Is there a mailbox in the medical center?

A: Yes, there is a mailbox in the medical center and it is located near the newspaper stands in the main entrance.

Q: Is there an ATM machine in the medical center?

A: Yes, there is an ATM machine located on the left side of the first left hall when entering from the main entrance.

Q: Where can I get something to eat?

A: Food may be purchased from the VAMC's cafeteria, located at the ground level. Directions: When entering from the main entrance, walk towards the center hall, there will be elevators on your right hand side. Proceed to the ground floor and take a right when exiting the elevator, go straight and the cafeteria will be on your right.

Q: Can I purchase cards or flowers in the medical center?

A: You can purchase cards or flowers from the gift/convenient store on the ground level.
Directions: When entering from the main entrance, walk towards the center hall, there will be elevators on your right hand side. Proceed to the ground floor and take a right when exiting the elevator

Q: Are wheelchairs available or should I bring my own?

A: You may use a wheelchair provided by the medical center.

Q: Examination of Property

A: The Medical Center reserves the right to examine all bags, backpacks, briefcases and personal property.

Q: Am I allowed to bring a pet to the medical center?

A: Only seeing-eye dogs/hearing support dogs are permitted in the building

Q: Smoking

A: Smoking is not permitted in the facility.
Smoking is permitted on the grounds. Please be attentive to signage which guides smokers as to the locations where smoking is permitted on the grounds and how close they may be to the building.

Q: Weapons on property

A: No weapons of any kind are permitted on the grounds of the Medical Center. If identified, weapons will immediately be confiscated by the DCVAMC police.

Q: Where do I find out about job openings at the medical center?

A: Go to Human Resource Management Service in room 1B122 on weekdays, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Q: I was told to arrive at least 20 minutes before my medical appointment to report to "Clinic Registration". What is the purpose of "Clinic Registration?"

A: With your consent, a family member or friend may accompany you.

Q: Who can help me with benefits issues at the medical center?

A: Service Officers representing veterans' organizations are available each Thursday in room __________ from _________ to _________ to assist you. You may wish to contact the Regional Office of VA's Veterans Benefits Administration, located at 1722 Eye St., N.W., Room 301, Washington, D.C. 20421. The phone number is (202) 530- 9400.

Q: Cameras and Camera Phones

A: No one may take photographs on medical center grounds or inside the facility without the permission of the Office of Public Affairs. If you are observed taking photographs, your camera will be confiscated by DCVAMC police and will not be returned until the digital photographs have been deleted or the film has been removed.

Q: Cell Phones

A: Use of cell phones is restricted in certain areas of the Medical Center. When on a treatment unit, please ask the Nurse Manager prior to using a cell phone. Cell phones can interfere with certain medical equipment

Q: What is HIPPA?

A: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability ACT (HIPPA) is a law that assures health insurance portability, reduce healthcare fraud and abuse, guarantee security and privacy of health information, and enforce standards for health information.

A: Videotaping is not permitted on the grounds of the Medical Center or inside the facility without the permission of the Office of Public Affairs.

Q: What is a CBOC?

A: CBOC is an abbreviation for Community Based Outpatient Clinic. The Washington DC VA Medical Center (DCVAMC) operates four of these clinics. They offer primary care health services in locations convenient to many veterans' homes. Specific locations and hours of operation for CBOCS may be found by ______________________________.

A: No, only certain tests are available at CBOCs. Check with your clinician.

Q: What is CNRC?

A: Comprehensive Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (CNRC), is also known as the Nursing Home, provide services such as: short stays for Geriatric Rehabilitation, long term care, and hospice/palliative care.

Q: If I am staying in CNRC, am I allowed to bring my own clothes and personal items?

A: Yes, it is actually recommended that you bring your personal belongings. Each CNRC room has drawers, cabinets, and locking closets so that you have a place to keep your items.

Q: Where can I wash my clothes if I am staying at the CNRC?

A: Laundry service is provided weekly and if you'd like to wash your own clothes that is also available, both are free of charge.

Q: Can I see all of my services at this VAMC facility?

A: Yes, all services are given with-in the same facility.

Q: Smoking Rules

A: This Medical Center is a "smoke-free" facility, and smoking is only allowed in designated areas that are outside and away from entrances or in the smoking shelter on the second floor patio area. Patients are encouraged to use the second floor smoking shelter area. For safety reasons, patients are encouraged not to smoke in outside areas after dark. Patients who fail to follow this policy are subject to having their smoking materials confiscated and to receiving a federal magistrate fine.
Stop Smoking classes are available at the Medical Center. Ask your nurse to call a staff member designated to help you stop smoking.

Q: If I want to smoke, where is it permitted?

A: Visitors and non-CNRC residents are permitted to smoke outside in designated areas. However, only CNRC residents are permitted to smoke in the CNRC smoking lounge.

A: Identification cards are issues through the Eligibility Office located in the main atrium of the Medical Center
