Knowledge is power. Learning what puts you at risk for cancer increases your changes for staying healthy.
Colorectal Cancer: Ask your Primary Care provider about colorectal cancer screening if you are age 50 or above; have a family history of colorectal polyps or inflammatory bowel disease; have a family history of colon cancer; eat a diet high in meat; have an inactive lifestyle; are obese; smoke; use alcohol heavily; and/or have diabetes.
Prostate Cancer: Get screened and speak to your doctor when you are 50 or over; if you have a family history; if you are an African-American male; if you eat a diet high in red meat and full-fat dairy.
Breast Cancer: Learn how to check yourself and do it regularly; if you are a woman age 50 or above get a mammogram; if you have a family history of breast cancer; if you had your period before the age of 12; if you started menopause after the age of 55; if you’ve had estrogen therapy; if you are obese; if you use alcohol; if you eat a high-fat diet.
Remember: Two out of three cancers can be prevented by-
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Physical activity throughout life
- A healthy diet
- No tobacco use
