Washington DC VA Medical Center

New Patient Orientation Class

By Cameron Barry, Public Affairs Intern

Program Specialist Jon Wilson conducts the New Patient Orientation Program every month Many Veterans who arrive at the Washington DC VA Medical Center (DCVAMC) for the first time are sometimes overwhelmed by the facility's size and have trouble comprehending the myriad of services available at the Medical Center. DCVAMC's is erasing this confusion with its "New Patient Orientation".

New Patient Orientation, held the last Tuesday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon, gives Veterans a brief overview of the Medical Center and helps them navigate the system. The small group setting, usually 20 people, allows Veterans to openly ask questions and to speak one-on-one with many of the care providers.

Since its inception, the orientation has been sponsored by the Washington/Rockville Elks Lodge #15 which provides the refreshments for the event.

The program is managed by Program Specialist, Jon Wilson, who says the Orientation is very popular.
"They leave here feeling 100% more comfortable about the care they'll be receiving in the future," Wilson said. "Many are actually excited to learn all we have to offer".
