Dieticians Celebrate National Nutrition Month

Did you know that about two-thirds of the American population has problems with weight and that among this figure about one-third is obese?

The American Dietetic Association (ADA), the national organization for clinical dietitians, recognizes March as National Nutrition Month. Each year at this time, ADA sponsors a month-long campaign to increase nutrition and physical activity awareness among the general public. This year, the theme is:

"NUTRITION, IT’S A MATTER OF FACT."

Nutrition and Food Service at the VA Medical Center will focus its National Nutrition Month campaign this year on the cost of being overweight. Obesity costs you your good health and obesity causes increases in health care costs to our veteran population and to the public. DCVAMC dietitians want to improve your "Nutrition IQ".

Be aware that by improving one’s eating habits and developing better physical activity patterns, you can significantly reduce risk factors linked to being overweight, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Sleep Apnea and other breathing problems

Are you ready to accept the challenge for this month and for a lifetime? Then be ready to celebrate National Nutrition month by taking action. Our clinical dietitians are gearing up with a variety of fitness and nutrition awareness activities. For more information, contact Nutrition and Food Service at 202-745-8000 extensions 8269 or 7458.
