This 21-suite Fisher House in Palo Alto, California is similar to the one to be built on the grounds of the DC VA Medical Center. The official ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for May 21.

WHAT: A ground breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of a 21-suite Fisher House on the campus of the Washington DC VA Medical Center. The 16,800 square foot two-story comfort home is the 50th Fisher House proffered to the U. S. Government and the 7th in the national capital area.

WHERE: The ground breaking will be held on the hospital campus at 50 Irving Street, NW. Rain or shine.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 10:30 a.m.

WHY: Fisher Houses provide "homes away from home" for service members and veterans and their families during the hospitalization of a loved one. Since its founding in 1990, more than 110,000 families have stayed at one or more Fisher Houses.

The homes are constructed on government property - military bases and Veterans Affairs medical center grounds. Fisher House Foundation builds the fully furnished and landscaped homes and gifts them to the government upon completion. Once built, the homes are operated and maintained by the military or Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Washington DC VA Medical Center is a tertiary care facility and a level-two Polytrauma Center serving veterans in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and the Maryland suburban area.
