Student Journalists Get a Lesson in Electronic Health Records

Eighteen college-level media interns, representing newspaper and broadcasting outlets nationwide, visited the Washington DC VA Medical Center on June 7, 2006.

The students are participating in the prestigious Kaiser Family Foundation Media Fellowships Program. The students learned about hospital operations from Mr. Sanford M. Garfunkel, Medical Center Director, and received an introduction to the highly-regarded VA electronic health records from Dr. Ross D. Fletcher, Chief of Staff. Following tours of the primary care areas of the medical center, Dr. Terrill Washington, Acting Chief, Pharmacy Service, welcomed the students to the pharmacy where he demonstrated how we apply barcodes to all inpatient medication and ensure the safety of patients through the Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) program.
