A number of construction and renovation projects are underway at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center and its Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Some projects will upgrade the medical center's infrastructure while others will improve patient areas, expand parking and allow the medical center to broaden its health care services to Veterans.

Patient & Visitor Parking Garage
The elevators of the newly-renovated garage are not operational yet so shuttle service is provided continuously throughout the day, Monday – Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The DC VA Medical Center is located in the heart of the nation's capital, making parking a challenge for some time. Veterans have requested expanded parking and we’re listening. So that we can better serve your parking needs, the Patient & Visitor Parking Garage has been renovated to add two new levels with 252 additional spaces.
There is one temporary caveat though. The elevators of the new garage are not functional yet. But rather than delay the opening of the garage any further, the medical center leadership developed a work around. Concierge transportation drivers are providing safe transportation from the parking garage to the medical center entrance. The concierge transport service runs continuously throughout the day, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ambulatory Veterans and visitors may use the stairs if they wish.
Veterans may also continue to use the Valet Parking Service. To utilize Valet Parking, Veterans will just need to pull to the entrance of the medical center and show their VA identification card. The service is free and no tipping is allowed.
The elevators should be operational by the Fall. Your continued patience is appreciated.
If all of the surface parking lots and valet lots fill to capacity, Veterans may be directed to the Satellite Parking Lot at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH is located just two miles away at 3700 North Capitol Street, NW, Washington, DC 20011.) A free shuttle service makes regular pickups and drop-offs at the Satellite Parking Lot and the DCVAMC.
Veterans with a handicap placard, handicap tags or utilizing wheel chairs should park at the main hospital campus and avoid using the satellite parking lot at the Armed Forces Retirement Home. Parking Lot #2, #1C, #2C and #6 have been designated handicap parking only. The medical center also operates two parking lot shuttles which run continuously throughout the day Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. One shuttle is ADA compliant with wheelchair access, the other is for ambulatory Veterans who may need a lift from the parking lot to the entrance.
Medical Center employees will continue to park in the Employee Parking Garage accessed at Gate 2 or the Satellite Parking Lot at the AFRH. View the Shuttle Schedule
Employees using public transportation, Red Line (Brookland/CUA) and Green Line (Columbia Heights), can utilize the International Limousine Shuttle Service to and from the medical center. View the Red and Green Line Shuttle Service.
Additionally, employees using mass transportation for their commute to and from work may qualify for the Transit Benefit Program. More information about the program can be obtained by contacting the Office of Human Resource Management.
New Community Clinics
Elected officials and representatives from Maryland, the Tri-Country Council for Southern Maryland, and builders and contractors joined Medical Center Director Michael S. Heimall, Feb. 19, 2019, to break ground on the new VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Charlotte Hall, Maryland.
Charlotte Hall: The new 17,000 square-foot VA clinic will offer Veterans quality health care and services including Primary Care; Mental Health; Dental, Audiology, Ophthalmology, Nutrition and Social Work Services; Physical Therapy; and a Pharmacy in addition to other services via secure Telehealth technology. The clinic will also offer Business Office services such as eligibility and in-take. Erecting a new VA clinic in Southern Maryland expands services and permits closer-to-home care for many more Veterans in the Tri-County area. The expected completion date for the new Charlotte Hall Clinic is late fall, 2020.
St. Mary’s County – Lexington Park: On December 2, 2019, the new 8,000 square foot clinic opened to provide “closer to home” for the 15,335 Veterans in the enrolled for care in the Tri-County area of Southern Maryland. The Lexington Park CBOC team provides safe and quality health care including primary care, mental health, social work services, comprehensive women's health care, telehealth, nutrition counseling, pharmacy consulting, and laboratory services. Also, the clinic offers office space to approved Veteran Service Organizations and VA community partners who help educate Veterans about resources and services provided in the community. The clinic is equipped with nine exam rooms, three mental health and telehealth suites and a dedicated Women’s Health Suite.
Prince George's County Consolidated Expansion - The expanded clinic is expected to be complete in 2025. Once opened, it will replace the current clinic and will be a welcomed addition to the DC VA Medical Center’s care system which currently operates Community-Based Outpatient Clinics in Gaithersburg and Camp Springs, Maryland; Southeast Washington, DC; and Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In addition, the Medical Center operates a 24/7 VA Community Resource and Referral Center located in Northeast Washington, DC.
Community Living Center Renovation Renovations are underway to expand the Community Living Center and to provide a more home-like environment for the 120 residents receiving long-term and rehabilitative care. The project to renovate the Community Living Center includes a 9,100 square-foot addition with 11 new private rooms for hospice care and interior renovations to include: all resident rooms (120 beds), dining area, administrative and support offices and the common areas. The interior renovations also include converting the four-bed patient rooms to two-bed rooms for improved privacy. The overall project completion is scheduled for April 2020
Emergency Department Renovation
The project to renovate and expand the Medical Center’s Emergency Department will construct a new approximately 5,100 square foot space and renovate 9,963 square feet of the existing Emergency Department. The project will improve the ED’s work flow and decrease patient wait times. It includes adding 11 new patient exam/treatment bed spaces which will increase bed capacity to 21 in addition to the three new fast-track rooms. The addition/renovation will also provide administrative staff spaces to include three control stations for staff serving different components, such as Mental Health, Resuscitation, and Negative Pressure Isolation. The project also includes a separate area for treating mental health patients. The estimated completion date is Fall 2021.
Sterile Processing Service Renovation
SPS is responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, preparing and storing surgical and medical equipment and supplies. The major project entails: a full renovation and expansion of the SPS area to improve efficiency, to update the facility to meet current regulatory requirements, and to replace equipment that has reached or is about to reach the end of its useful life. The scope of the renovation includes all new HVAC, plumbing, electrical, finishes, and reprocessing equipment. The expected completion date is Fall 2019.
New Linear Accelerator for Cancer Treatment
Radiology's new Linear Accelerator for state-of-the-art cancer treatment will match the present 21EX and will replace the aged 6EX unit. This will allow for continuation and expansion of services to Veterans with less down time. The project is expected to be complete in Winter 2019.
Oncology & Cancer Center (OCC)
The new Oncology & Cancer Center (OCC) consolidates the existing oncology clinics from the second and fourth floors and relocates them to the first floor of Building #1. The project allows for the construction of an addition, including a separate entry, patient vehicle drop-off, entry canopy and lobby for the new OCC. The clinic will be composed of 17,072 gross square feet (GSF) of overall 10,250 GSF renovation and 6,822 GSF addition.
Providing a separate entrance for patients for the OCC creates its own district identity for the building and provides a safer patient flow to the clinic. Locating the exam rooms, infusion clinic, research areas, and physician’s offices to their own self-contained space will improve the privacy and clinical and treatment functions of the facility for both patients and staff. Veterans and family members often have long stays associated with their exams, lab work, and/or infusion needs.
The medical center is now over 50 years old and many of its vital internal systems are due for replacement and upgrade including the pipes that serve our heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Two projects have been awarded that will improve our ability to heat and cool the building. Improvements are scheduled to begin taking effect in the spring and summer of 2020.
The Induction System Upgrade Project has begun with a phased replacement of the existing two-pipe system in the main building (building #1). The supply and return piping systems will be replaced. Additionally, a second set of supply and return piping will be installed to provide the facility with the capability to add or replace the existing induction units in the future. The expected completion date of the Induction System project is spring of 2020.
The chiller plant and cooling tower project will convert three independent chilled water systems to a primary/secondary type of system with multiple primary loops, which will improve system redundancy. The expected completion date for the Cooling Tower and Chiller Plant Upgrade project is summer of 2020, with the operation of the chillers planned earlier, by the start of the cooling season in 2020.
Campus Wide Wayfinding and Signage Update
$1.2 million upgrades and replacement to improve wayfinding systems throughout hospital. Enhanced navigational tools for comprehensive locating with consistent, correct and clear messaging.
