DCVAMC Launches Medical Foster Home Program

A Veteran and a caregiver in a home-like setting

A Veteran and a caregiver in a home-like setting

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

For more than a year, DC VA Medical Center social worker, Sheila Rice, has been working diligently to get the Medical Foster Home program up and running. Her hard work finally paid off last month when the Medical Center placed its first Veteran in a local Medical Foster Home.

A Medical Foster Home provides Veterans a safe, family-like setting which provides 24/7 care. Veterans will also be visited regularly by the Home Based Primary Care team members.

Although the Medical Foster Homes are not paid for by the VA, the homes are inspected and approved by a VA interdisciplinary team made up of an RN, a safety specialist, a dietitian and a social worker. For more information about Medical Foster Homes, phone, Sheila Rice, 202-745-8000, ext. 5-5142
