Michelle Ward, an RN on 3-East, has been named the medical center’s Nursing Education & Research Department Preceptor of the Year. The prestigious honor is awarded to the most extraordinary nurse preceptor who serves as teacher, mentor and role model to new nurses.

Preceptors are instrumental in the professional development of new and experienced nurses. They help bridge the gap between nursing school and a hospital setting and are vital to the hospital’s success. Studies link effective preceptors with reduced nurse turnover and increased patient safety.

With the current nation-wide shortage of nurses, the role of preceptor is more important than ever; and ensures VA can meet the needs of Veterans for years to come. With the implementation of the RN Transition to Practice Program, a 12-month residency for new graduate nurses, VA preceptors serves as an integral aspect of VHA’s program to train and retain top nurses.

Aside from her many duties on 3-E34w2q321121ast and helping develop the next generation of nurses, Ms. Ward is now pursuing an advanced practice nursing degree and doctoral degree.
