In honor of Military Appreciation Month, we are kicking off our mini-concert series, Music in the Park, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Join us May 26, at 2 p.m. for a family-friendly afternoon featuring the talents of DC-area Veterans. The event is free and open to the public to honor Veterans, active duty service members, their families as well as VA caregivers during National Military Appreciation Month.
May’s concert presents the Bill Hairston Project, the all-veteran band featuring the sounds of blues, jazz and pop. The public is invited to come and unwind, enjoy the sounds, and learn more about VA health care and benefits while showing appreciation for area veterans and active duty service members.
The concerts are held monthly during the summer and early fall to provide a public platform to boost the medical center’s community engagement and to bring awareness to VA programs and initiatives as well as community resources.
Music therapy is a big part of the medical center’s recreation therapy program. It’s an established and successful health care specialty that addresses the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual wellbeing of Veterans. Music in the Park gives performers a motivational boost, a tangible goal to reach, and an opportunity to share the results of their hard work and dedication to music.
This is the third year the Office of Public Affairs has hosted Music in the Park, which has been recognized by VHA Communications as an award-winning external special event.
More concerts are planned throughout the summer and early fall. Visit the medical center’s Facebook page, WashingtonDCVAMC, or follow us on Twitter, DCVAMC, for the latest mini-concert information and medical center events.
