Acting Medical Center Director
Mr. Connell discusses sterile processing procedures with staff members.
Prior to being appointed acting medical center director at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Colonel (retired) Lawrence B. Connell served as a senior advisor to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
As the acting director, Connell is focused on providing staff the resources needed to ensure the safety and well-being of the Veterans we are privileged to serve. Since arriving at the medical center, he has visited many inpatient units and departments to greet Veterans and meet staff members.
In his short two-week timeframe at the medical center, he has led the team to remedy and/or mitigate a number of concerns including:
• Having the warehouse area cleaned to receive medical supplies to address inventory insufficiencies;
• Built and put online a new inventory management system, Generic Inventory Package, to better track and replenish inventory;
• Implemented a new supply request process and email group as well as an emergency telephone contact to request medical supply needs
• Working to assess critical staffing needs and expedite hiring.
Mr. Connell is ready to meet the challenges of the tasks at hand. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Science in Communications and earned a Master's degree from Troy State University in International Relations.
He entered the Army in August of 1985, is a Distinguished Military Graduate and received a Regular Army appointment in Army Aviation.
He is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, as well as a graduate of the Disney Institute for Health Care Excellence.
