The Washington DC VA Medical Center’s Voluntary Service was recently recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs with The American Spirit Award for Excellence, in the military recruitment category. Voluntary Service earned the award for its highly successful recruitment of Marine volunteers and partnership with Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall’s Marine Corps Community Service (MCCS).
For more than two years, active duty Marines from Headquarters and the Service Battalion Henderson Hall have collaborated with medical center staff in the planning and support of major outreach events and Veterans’ activities. A true partnership has developed that has allowed Voluntary Service to “go the extra mile” in providing services to Veterans. The Marines have become a welcome addition to the Capitol Excellence team and are a commanding presence at the medical center’s many outreach events.
The American Spirit Award is a national honor created by the Department of Veterans Affairs to award highly successful volunteer recruitment initiatives in four different categories: student recruitment, senior recruitment, corporate recruitment and military recruitment.
