Washington DC VA Medical Center
Cafe Grand Opening
For over a year, Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center Veterans, visitors and staff members have been waiting patiently for the PatriotCafé to re-open. As a special thank you to its patrons, the Veterans Canteen Service is hosting a Grand Opening Celebration on July 25 beginning at 9 a.m. in the café’s basement location on 50 Irving Street, N.W. The festive event will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony, music, prize giveaways and free refreshments.
According to Dwight Brown, Chief of the Medical Center’s Veterans Canteen Service, Veterans and staff are going to be pleasantly surprised with the transformation. "The new space is really beautiful and more efficient, and the traffic flow makes more sense."
The 9,300 square-foot renovation project is much more than cosmetic. Reconfiguring the space permitted the installation of new serving equipment which is allowing VCS to expand its food offerings with items frequently requested by Veterans. “We’re excited to offer new menu items like a pasta station, brick oven pizza and sushi,” said Brown.
Veterans and staff members are invited to join the celebration and enter for a chance to win great prizes like a television, laptop computer, a coffee maker or cookware.
The café closed in February 2018 for the major renovation project which improved the kitchen, dining room, refrigeration, HVAC, traffic flow and permitted the installation of new food preparation and serving equipment. During the construction, the Patriot Store and the Patriot Brew Café offered a number of "grab and go" items, while food vendor trucks provided hot meals for purchase.
