Excellence in Action: Gloria Hairston
Gloria Hairston, the medical center's Director of the Office of Public Affairs, was recently awarded the "Patriotic Employer Award" by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
Gloria Hairston, the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center's Director of the Office of Public Affairs was recently recognized by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves, with the "Patriotic Employer Award".
She was recognized for her extraordinary efforts in support of the Maryland Army National Guard 1229th Transportation Company in Baltimore, MD. Ms. Hairston has been an integral part of the unit's family support group especially during the unit's recent deployments. Her efforts of engaging Soldiers and family members with coordinated outreach events to educate members about VA health care, benefits and community partner resources have greatly benefitted transitioning Soldiers to civilian life.
Ms. Hairston’s passion for Veterans come's naturally. She is the daughter, sister and the wife of Army Veterans. "Serving Veterans is not just a job for me, it’s my life and I’m passionate about ensuring all Veterans know about the benefits and services they’ve earned with their service and their sacrifices."
She continues to serve Veterans and active duty service members in her career as a VA caregiver at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center. There she leads an award-winning team of internal and external communicators who are tasked with engaging staff, Veterans and community stakeholders. Through outreach, diverse activities and events, social media platforms and Veteran-centered publications she and the team work to create a culture of continuous care and "Capitol Excellence."
