Reclaiming Your Relationships

Military service can present unique challenges in marriages and partnerships including: financial hardships, long separations, multiple deployments, injuries and illness. These challenges can add extreme stress to the family and relationships and impact the quality of Veterans’ lives.

To help Veterans and their partners learn to better cope with these challenges, the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s Chaplain Service will host Warrior to Soul Mate (W2SM), a two-day workshop for couples.  The workshops are free for eligible Veterans and are designed to help couples learn effective communication and conflict resolution skills to strengthen their relationships.

According to Carol Ramsey-Lucas, Chief, Chaplain Service, the medical center has been hosting the workshops for the past seven years. She has seen first-hand how W2SM has helped couples reclaim their relationships.  “It’s wonderful to see the transformation. The workshops reinforce positive attitudes and help improve emotional understanding and behaviors that nurture healthy and loving families.”

The workshops are being held at the DC Vet Center, 1296 Upshur Street, NW, in Washington, D.C. Two sessions are planned in September and October. September’s  workshop is available for all Veterans while the workshop in October is especially dedicated for LGBTQ-identified Veterans.

“We are delighted to be able to provide a W2SM workshop specifically for LGBTQ Veterans and their partners in a supportive environment that is safe for all,” said Chaplain Ramsey-Lucas.
