Summer is Coming
Children keeping cool throwing buckets of water on each other.
Thursday, June 1, 2017
Summer is coming, and along with the long days, hot sun, pool parties, barbeques and traveling come special hazards. Here are some safety tips to follow to make sure nothing ruins your family’s summer fun:
Water safety
- Nothing beats a dip in the water in hot weather. Learn to swim and make sure family members who can’t are protected with an approved floatation device.
- Water and alcohol are a bad mix. Alcohol use accounts for up to half of the deaths associated with water recreation.
- Never swim alone and supervise children at all times.
Sun and heat safety
- Heat-related deaths are preventable. Learn the signs of heat stress: dizziness, fainting, rapid heart beat, headache and nausea.
- Use plenty of sunscreen. The Centers for Disease Control recommend using a full ounce of sunscreen –that’s a shot glass-- when first applying and reapply often.
- Stay hydrated with lots of non-alcoholic and caffeine-free drinks.
Bug bites
- Bugs such as ticks, mosquitoes, and some flies can spread serious diseases like Zika, dengue, and Lyme disease. Reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites by removing breeding sites, and using mosquito repellent.
- Pregnant women need to take extra precautions when traveling to Zika-prone areas. For current information about Zika travel notices, visit the CDC interactive map: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/zika-travel-information
