Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center to Host Winterhaven Homeless Veterans Stand Down

On January 25, 2020, the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center will open its doors to homeless and at-risk Veterans for the 26th Annual Winterhaven Homeless Veterans Stand Down. The annual outreach event will be held at the main campus located on 50 Irving Street, NW in Washington, D.C. from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.The stand down is a one-stop service and resource haven that provides a full day of services including: health care assessments and immunizations, VA benefits and claims assistance, burial and memorial services, housing, education and employment counseling, financial planning, as well as substance abuse and rehabilitative programs and psychosocial services. Veterans will also receive personal care kits, warm clothing, boots, haircuts, and a warm meal. Attendees who are underemployed and at-risk of homelessness will have access to resources to assist in foreclosure or rental eviction avoidance, as well as utility bill assistance and legal aid.
According to Medical Center Director Michael S. Heimall, major outreach events like the Winterhaven Homeless Veterans Stand Down are a crucial part of the medical center’s Health Care for the Homeless Veterans Program. “The event is a testament to the power of community partnerships. We are thankful to have the support of over 70 community organizations, federal, state and local government entities as well as private organizations dedicated to helping Veterans,” said Heimall.
More than 300 community volunteers, donors and government agencies have joined forces with the medical center to eliminate and avert Veteran homelessness in the DC metropolitan area. The HUD Veterans Affinity Group sponsors an annual boot drive, providing well over 10,000 pairs of boots and shoes in support of the stand down. Community members, VA employees and Veteran Service Organizations have also donated new and gently used coats to ensure that every Veteran receives a warm coat to protect them from the winter temperatures.
Eligible Veterans throughout the DC area will be provided free transportation from local shelters and public transportation stops including Brookland/CUA and Columbia Heights Metro Stations.
